I used to feel really bad about my career.
All I wanted was to have a fulfilling career, that many people respected, and maybe even envied…but it seemed I tried so many things without finding a great fit.
I’ve been a lawyer, and HR director, a marketing director, a compliance professional… but for the longest it seemed like I was a round peg in a tiny square hole.
A few weeks ago I listened to the audiobook “Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized world” by David Epstein, and I felt liberated.
See I had gone through a challenging 2019 and decided that I wanted to focus on a career that I enjoyed. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I was willing to put in the work.
As I thought about it, I kept point back towards Marketing…but it just seemed like I was giving up so much – the prestige associated with being a lawyer…
And I felt like I was starting all over again, with so much width but not enough depth.
But I trudged on, hoping that I was on the right path, and then I read Range and realized that I was not alone.
There were so many other people just like me who had taken the circuitous path to success, and they were actually more poised to be successful because they had experience with so many different industries.
Having a wide Range in your journey to a fulfilling career, seems to be the most efficient path after all.
