Nigeria & Customer Service

Posted on January 13, 2011

Everybody in Nigeria complains of NEPA** (National Electric Power Authority), and everyone also complains about corruption and lack of an infrastructure in Nigeria. I agree all of those need to be fixed, but I think one of the things that really bother’s me is the customer service.

I don’t understand why some people are so rough and so rude. You’re trying to find out why they billed you incorrectly when all of a sudden the person snaps!

“Am I your maaate?! Do you know who I YAM?!! I will show you Peppe!!!” (Nigerian accent)

Then all of a sudden you have to start pleading because you can’t afford to be shown “peppe.” Your knees drop quickly to the ground.

“Oga…Ahbeg sorry oh! It was a slip of the tongue…please please ejo sorry e ma binu…”

you have to continue until you have pacified his ego…and then finally, perhaps after sliding a few Nairas under his palm, perhaps then, you will get some help.

Granted- it’s not always like that, but it always hurts when it happens.

…we have to learn to respect each other, and to appreciate the customer – let’s make Nigeria  a welcoming place for all.

Quick update: after posting this I was informed of the good news

“It is now PHCN – POWER HOLDING COMPANY OF NIGERIA. No more NEPA – NATIONAL ELECTRIC POWER AUTHORITY.”
